Welland Open Water Race results!

So several of our LOST swimmers made the trek to Welland to swim one of the various OW races they offered last weekend!  The had Age Group swimmers and Masters swimmers, something I would like to get for the LOST Race, but I’m still working on the governing bodies to try and figure out.  They were also offering 1k, 3k, 5k and 10k races… a great opportunity to try something a bit different… and perhaps longer!

That’s the good news, lots of swimmers… the bad news is most of the races were cancelled or cut short due to weather.  A few hours into the races there was lightning and the races had to be called.  As a race director myself, that’s a tough call to make, but safety first.  I hope it isn’t something we have to do with the LOST Race… but you have to do, what you have to do!

a great facility for rowing... or open water swimming!!!

I got a few emails from several LOSTies at the race and found out we did really well!  There was 19 that started the 10k, at least 5 LOSTies among them… but the even better news was that 4 of the 6 that finished before the race was cancelled were LOSTies… including a 1,2,3 sweep!!! Way to go Bud, Gary, Lisa, Scott… and Michele and Darren… Darren got about 8.5k into it and Michele got pulled with less than 1k to go!).

Also hats off to Anna-marie, who came in 2nd in the 3k in her age group with a 1:34… and Gerry who placed 10/21 with a very respectable 1:04 for the 3k!

Here are the results that I was able to get for the 10k:

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!

  1. That was an awesome race, it’s too bad most people didn’t get to finish. I’m surprised as few people were out, that was a great course and a really fun event!
