A new LOST world record… 86 swimmers!

So how cool is that… 85 swimmers out for a dip on a Saturday morning in August!  Awesome.  It never ceases to amaze me how much people like swimming in our group… as evidenced by the relentless growth.  Of course it will level off at some point… some day… but not today!

Yes, these are the good ol’ days!

Without getting all nostalgic, but as I’ve said many times, it started with such a small group… just me… and then me and 6 or 8 buddies… and then after a while we’d get up to 20 people out on a Saturday… and this was only 3 or 4 years ago.  I still remember Carl (of Hyperweb fame, that hosts this site for us), saying one Saturday morning “You wait, you’ll be getting 40 or 50 people out on Saturdays!”

Naturally I thought that was a lofty goal… and today we just had 86 swimmers!  That’s more than we had for the LOST Race last year!

Anyway, enough of my reminiscing… on to the present and the future!

86 swimmers… and still not as crowded as swimming at your local pool on a Saturday morning!

It was beautiful this morning… a few of us came out for the LOST Sunrisers at 6:00 am and got an extra 1 1/2 hours or so.  The sun was literally coming up, the air was only 24 C… but the water was 76F!!!  Within about an hour though the sun was warming up the humidity and the air temp was HOT!

One of these days I’m going to graph the water temps we’ve had over the past 7 years… usually, late in Aug or early Sept, the water gets up to a peak of about 72 F or so… it never gets warmer than that… except that it has been warmer than that for weeks!  Definitely a record warm year for Lake O… which is pretty nice if you are swimming across it… like 7 of us are!  That’s just one less thing to have to worry about.  Now all we have to worry about is swimming 41 – 51 km!!!

Still room for a few more!

I will give you that the first 50 m along the shore was pretty green and smelly… but it was fine as soon as you got past that.  Oh well, you can’t have it all… if it’s going to be warm… that’s the trade off!

I’ll send something out later in the week, but don’t forget, not that I would let you… that the 5th annual 3.8k LOST Race and the 1st annual Masters Swimming Canada 10K National Championship is next Saturday morning!!!

Maisey, Jill and I cheated… we did the LOST race this week, just to scout it out… and take a few pics along the way!

Go over the race package (under the LOST Race tab above) if you have any questions, all the answers are in there!

(so no regular LOST swimming… and the LOST Race starts at Maple Grove… and finishes where we swim, at the LOST Beach!)

A few final preparations are still under way, but we’ll tell you all about them at the race!  A few new additions will be that everyone will receive either a 10K cap or a LOST cap… and a 10K medal or LOST medal… and they look great!

See you soon!

I believe they are knocking the Gilgan estate down… they’ve started building the Edgemere condos there… they’ll be nice… but still seems a shame!

Cheers,

Rob

Maisey, Jill and I weren’t setting any records doing the LOST Race route this week!

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
