A new record... 33 smilin' swimmers!

So we had another great day on Saturday!  Now the water was a bit chillier, 62F / 17C… and the weather was overcast… and there was a fairly strong current… but you know what… it was still a lot of fun.

On the other hand, we must be doing something right, because we are only 4 weeks into it and there are more people out than ever!  And everyone is coming out with a big ol’ grin on their face!

Bill's kayak shot's!

This week we had a few interesting things of note: Melanie was back from her amazing 20k swim at the US Masters Open Water Championships (see entry below) to do a victory lap with us.  This is, of course, in preparation for her up-coming Lake Ontario Crossing where she will be the first person ever to swim the true marathon swim of 42.2 km / 26.2 miles from Port Dalhousie to Oakville on Aug 11-12!

A special thanks to marathon kayaker, Bill!  He paddled for the 7 1/2 hours that his wife, Mel, swam… no easy task… that’s a long time in a kayak!  The special thanks is because he came out and kayaked for us… and got all these great pics!

The water was crystal clear this week... just beautiful! (click to enlarge)

We also had a special guest from the ol’ US of A… Ted Gregory drove the 7 hours up from Pennsylvannia just to do a LOST swim with us!  Last summer he joined us for a swim too, because, believe it or not, it’s hard to find nice cold water south of here this time of year!  He was training for an English Channel attempt, but never got the weather to try for his record of the oldest man to cross the Channel… at 72!  But this year he and some buddies are going back to do it as a relay!  Go get’em Teddy boy!

So even though it was a smidge cooler than last week and grey and overcast… having the most people out ever for a LOST swim more than made up for it!  A good time was had by all.

PS.  Congrats to several LOSTies that did the Welland Half Ironman… look up those results on sportstats.ca… some great racing!

See you next week!

Cheers,

Rob

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
