… Saturday, June 4, 8:00 am will be the first LOST SWIM of 2011!!!

Check the map on the “How to be a LOST Swimmer” tab to find the location.  Generally speaking we are pretty easy to find though… we’re pretty much the only ones wandering around the park in bathing suits and wetsuits at 8:00 am!

A couple of administrative things first… come early, we want to get in the water at 8:00… so don’t show up then.  I’ll be there at 7:30 to explain everything (and help psyche up all the chickens!), so you won’t be the first one there!

Secondly, you MUST be registered to swim!

Now, having said that, you can bring your registration form and money to the beach (also in future weeks, if you are registering later), but obviously pre-registration is easier for Melanie (our team registrar and Lake O Crossing swimmer in August!) and myself, but on the beach is fine too.  Of course, it’s all about having insurance coverage, it would be free and require no forms if it was up to me, but alas, that’s not the world we live in… so PLEASE get registered before you swim and don’t make me the bad guy by saying you can’t swim because you aren’t registered!  Okay, that’s done.

Now, about the swim… it’s going to be cold… so get your head around that right now.  But we’ll swim smart and safe… a probably quickly because it’s going to be so cold!  But it can be done… the guys in down St Catherines way have been swimming in the Welland Canal in the low 50’s… as have the guys in Dover, England… as have the guys in the San Francisco Bay!  Oh, and they all swim “naked”!!!  (for the newbies, that’s without wetsuits!).

You might think this is crazy… and it kind of is… but it does make you a better swimmer… and your body definitely does get use to it.  There’s no magic to it, it’s just training like any other training.  If you are doing an Ironman and there are lots of hills, then practice even harder hills, so when you get to the race the ones they throw at you will be a piece of cake!  Well, if you’ve been swimming in water in the 50’s, then when we get into the 60’s and 70’s you will feel like a baby in bathwater!  Really.

We’ll do coffee after the swim, (you’ll need it to warm up!)… but I think we might be doing a run and/or ride after the swim in future weeks for those who are so inclined… we can discuss it over coffee… I’ll keep you posted on that.

PS. if you aren’t on the weekly email list that I send out to the group to notify them about stuff… but would like to be… send me an email at [email protected] or [email protected]

Oh, one last thing… don’t worry, it’ll be fun!

See you on the beach!

Cheers,

Rob

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
