Hey all,

Well I just had to post this email I got from fellow LOSTie, Claudia Hutchinson, who just did the Olympic Distance Triathlon World Championships in Budapest!!!

I wanted to brag for her (she’s far too modest!) and share her email with you… a nice plug about the benefits of LOST Swimming… see, I’m not crazy, it really does help!!!

Cheers,

Rob

Hey Rob

I’m in Budapest and did the Worlds Olympic triathlon a couple of days ago…..the Danube was only 56 F so all the swims I did in the big Lake O definitely helped. So I need to say thank you for forming LOST and for making me feel welcome and part of the group and for encouraging me to swim in some very cold water. It really helped on race day here in Budapest!

I hope your training is going well!

Claudia,

Joanne and I were talking about you on the weekend, we thought your big race was coming up shortly! Congrats!!!  World Champs… that is really amazing!  We are both very happy for you and can’t wait to hear about the whole thing, what a spectacular race and location!

That’s pretty chilly for a big Olympic tri… but I am glad that LOST swimming paid off for you!  You must have felt like you had a bit of an ace up your sleeve because I’m sure there would have been tons of people all panicked about the water temp!

A big part of swimming in water that cold, if not all of it, is the mental toughness and confidence… you are very unlikely to get hypothermia in a wetsuit, in 56F, in a 1.5km race, because you simply aren’t in there long enough.  Also LOST Swimming would have made your body somewhat familiar with the cold water conditioning… but the benefit is mostly mental.  If you can say to yourself “ya, that’s cold, but what the hell, I’ve swum in water that cold before”… then you know you’ll be able to do it… and you’ll have a huge advantage on those that didn’t know they could do it… and you don’t come out of the swim all rattled either.  It’s still a tough swim… but you know that you are tough too!

Ya done us LOSTies proud!!!

Congrats!

Cheers,

Rob

And in case you were wondering how she did… she was 30th in her division, with an overall time of 2:29!  Very impressive!  (31:02 for the swim!!!)

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
