Another good swim at Gulliver’s Lake… Sunday, May 2

So, I had a swim much like my swim yesterday.  2 laps, about 2km, 56F/13C, no wetsuit, 35ish minutes (I forgot to check my watch).

I was lucky yesterday because there was a bunch of scuba divers there, maybe 30 people in total andfor safety reasons, that’s a good thing.  I’m a knowledgeable and experienced swimmer and could swim comfortably on my own… but safety is important… I figured I was fine to swim alone, but it’s always some fluky thing that happens when you read about these stories in the paper when something went wrong… so I asked my mom if she wanted to come for a ride to Gulliver’s with me.  Yes, I got my mommy to watch over me!  Actually she had a nice little walk, if you haven’t been there, there is a trail around the lake, so to swim it is about 1km per loop and to walk it is about 1.5km per loop.  So she just came and had a nice walk.

About the only thing of interest was the fish.  There are quite a few fish in Gullivers, trout, I believe, just 2 or 3 pounds and about a foot long.  I saw probably about 20 of them yesterday, but just one or two at a time.  Then today I swam over two schools of them, several hundred in each school.  I stopped and just floated about 3 feet over them for a few moments.  The water was crystal clear and I just saw all of them looking up at me, they didn’t even scatter.  They had this funny look on their face… as if they were thinking… “what the hell are you doing, crazy man?”  So I swam on.  I don’t need that kind of attitude from some stupid fish!  BTW, if you are the type that gets freaked out by seeing a fish, think of it this way, it is like seeing a rabbit when you are running… kind of cool and interesting and makes you feel good for no particular reason.

Overall a good swim.  I was fine when I got out of the water yesterday, then after about 10 minutes the cold blood started returning to my body core and I shook quite strongly for about 45 minutes on the drive home.  Today was much better, I cranked the heat in the Jeep (my mom was sweating!) and I had virtually no shaking!  That’s a good thing… that’s what I’m training for… because you can train your body to become acclimatized to cold water.

I’ll let you know what’s up for next weekend, Darren and I will likely do the same thing, except start at 8:00 am, but I’ll let you know.  Hope to see you there.

Cheers,

Rob

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
