I had to copy this email that Steve sent me after my blog about Guelph Lake and the Pier to Pier being washed out… check this out about the 2009 LA Tri… now THAT’S a triathlon!
Cheers,

Rob!
Enjoyed your blog but not the news 🙁 about a non-swim weekend for you & family. You must go crazy when you don’t get in the water especially when you had the whole weekend planned with some great events! But that’s what we expect I guess for excitement (and disappointment) for open water swimming. It still beats a predictable pool !
1 foot white caps? and cancelled the event?? lame. I agree!
Well, I think I’m catching on that you are a rarity when it comes to mixing the words swim/fun/challenge ! So, as you go through a no-swim-this-weekend withdrawal, thought I’d send you a couple fun videos to cheer you up a bit. (You do sign off as “Cheers” I notice so am just trying to follow in that train of thought) No reply needed. Just enjoy…
The LA Triathlon Oct 2009. It was their worst waves in 10yr history they said. But they didn’t cancel! I just thought it was great fun to try to get past the first 50 to 100 feet! (took me about 12 minutes to get past the shore waves. Learned to dolphin dive in those 12 min.!) I went with friend, John, and he was in wave 1hr before me so I was able to take the video. 6 minute wave intervals started to turn into 15 to 20 minute intervals! I hadn’t started when the first place finisher was done on this Olympic level race. They got wayyyy behind because of the water….
This one is funny. Yellow cap guys, I think ages 35-39. About 300 of them. Instead of running straight out into the water, they all start to run up the beach! (they know by the time they get past the washing machine effect, they should be in line with red marker to get around). Then, half of them run into the water and the other half stand on the beach watching them wondering if they should follow?!. Did they forget this is still a race?!! It was like Lemming Fest!
We caught up with two lifeguards the next day…. they commented that they had 432 rescues (!). There were around 2,000 in the event.
You would’ve loved it I’m sure. 🙂
I do Malibu tri next Sat so won’t be there for LOST swim but hopefully the following Saturday if anyone’s game. Will see what happens by then.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend. !
