Bill and Rob, 55F water, but another beautiful day at Gullivers (May 15)
Bill and Rob, 55F water, but another beautiful day at Gullivers (May 15)

So Darren and I headed out to Gullivers Lake this morning and arrived at 8:00… only to find our numbers had grown from 2 people to 3 people… a 50% improvement from last weekend!  Bill Johnson (of Mel and Bill fame!) was already there!  I naturally assumed that Mel had dragged him along, but the came of his own volition and was rarin’ to go!  No foxes this weekend, but went down were they had been and got changed… and checked the water temp… not surprisingly the weather we had this week didn’t exactly warm things up… in fact it was colder… 55F / 12C / 🙁 . But we soldiered on.  Actually Bill and Darren were both quite warm, Darren had the whole 9 yards again… wetsuit, neoprene cap, mits, booties… Bill had the regular wetsuit and 2 latex caps.  I did my usual speedo, cap and googles (makes the bag much lighter).  I said I would like to do 2 laps (2 km) for sure, maybe even 3 or 4, but that’s what I said last week too… and could only handle 2 laps.  Maybe there is something to this “training” stuff… or maybe I’m getting mentally tougher… or maybe all that cold water just kills brain cells… whatever the reason I was able to do 3 laps today, Bill did 3 as well and Darren did a very comfortable 2 laps.

I was shaking pretty hard when I got out, so much so that we got Darren to take the pics as I couldn’t hold my hand anywhere near steady.  Good news is that we hopped in the car and I was toasty warm by the time we got home.  (but I did have a hot tub when I got home, just for good measure!).  A good time was had by all, so hope to see more of you out there next weekend and keep it growing!  I’ve coaxed my daughter Maisey to come and lifeguard / swim with me for at least part of it tomorrow, but I’m not sure when we are going as I said I’d let her sleep in on her one morning she doesn’t get up early to swim with OAK… and since I’m going to do 10km / 10 laps.  Now that I’m swimming outdoors, I think it might kill me to go back in and do 10k at the YMCA!  Don’t worry, I’m not doing it “naked”… I’m wearing a wetsuit tomorrow!

Cheers,

Rob

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
