LOST swimming…. and the Paisley Run & Ride!!!

… how bad is that, I almost forgot about LOST Swimming on the weekend!  There has been so much going on in the swimming world (Rebekah’s Lake O Crossing, Christine’s Lake O Crossing, Melanie’s Lake O Crossing that starts tomorrow night and the LOST Race on Saturday!)

Paisley Run & Ride, 2011

Also, I wasn’t there.  I missed my first LOST Swim of the season, on the weekend.  A bunch of us went up to a good friend’s farm in Paisley (up near Sauble Beach) for the Second Annual Run and Ride weekend!  Julia has an incredible farm up there and was good enough to throw a huge party… and race!  We drove up Friday and along with a dozen or so others set up tents and camped on the farm.  Then Saturday morning was the big 21k Trail Run Race.  Joe set up an incredible trail course that included a forest trail, road, farmers fields, rail line and more forest trails… spectacular course!  Joe is also using his superior organizational skills to manage all the boats for the LOST Race again this year too!

It was just a fun run, but we’re all racers, so we all ran it pretty hard… and it was not an easy course by any stretch!  Peter won, of course… and the rest of us managed to finish.

Not satisfied with a tough run, we held back on the imbibing briefly and decided to rent some canoes and paddle down the Saugeen River!  A lot of fun!  Then came the pig roast, the band and even more fun until the wee hours!  And a 60 k or 120 k bike ride the next morning!  Great weekend!

LOST Swimming, Aug 6, 2011... toasty warm... 77F!!!

Meanwhile, back at the Lake… Melanie took over and gave my usual safety speech to the good crowd of LOST Swimmers that showed up for another good swim.

We’ve had a lot of storms and wind this week… and with that, big waves… and with the big waves and warm air and water… we ended up with green lake barf washing up on shore!  Well, seaweed, but it’s a bit smelly as a few swimmers on Saturday happened to mention!  Fortunately, I did my Tuesday run down to the lighthouse last night and there was no trace of it now… easy come, easy go!

The good news is the water is exceptionally warm… 77F / 25C!!!  It rarely ever gets that warm!  We also had 37 swimmers out to enjoy the balmy weather and water.  We also were missing a bunch of LOST Swimmers who went down to the Welland Race, but more on that later!  A big thanks to Darren for getting the traditional LOST morning pic too!

3 more sleeps until the LOST Race… it’s going to be great!

Cheers,

Rob

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
