“Once in a Blue Moon Swim!”

Well that was pretty cool… on Friday we had our first group night swim!

Blue Moon Swim… before we tested the water temp!

Given that it was a night swim and our first one, we decided it made sense to keep it limited to a smaller group (no, we weren’t trying to exclude you!)… just more logistics and safety issues, so we thought it made sense to try it out first.

proof that we did get wet in the 55F water!

The good news is… it worked out great!  The funny thing was that most people have a bit of an issue about swimming at night, which is understandable, especially if you are swimming in a place with lots of “aquatic life” that plants ideas in your head… but, as big as Lake O is… it’s still not the ocean!  Nothing to fear in here!

Not sure if Jeff was shocked from the cold… or that Mel and Bill were sharing a “beverage”!

Okay, that’s not entirely true.  You could have feared the cold.  I had to laugh, because as much as everyone was “worried” about a night swim… when they found out how cold it was… the lack of light was the least of the issues.

Blue Moon Swim, 2012

The Lake rolled over… and the water temp was 55F!  It had been 69F last weekend… and was 70F two days after this when we swam the Pier to Pier… but none of that mattered on Friday night… it was chilly!

Maisey… big smile… or a grimace from the cold?! We’ll go with “smile”!

Jeff and Mel get the prize for doing the most actual swimming of the 8 swimmers we had out… there was also 4 kayakers, including myself… and a few curious supporters!  Jeff and Mel probably swam about 30 minutes and everyone else either did a nice little swim or splashed around… can’t say I could blame them at that temp.  But I still gave them a hard time… from the warmth of my kayak!

Anyway, the event was definitely a keeper!  We’ll try and make it an annual thing for next year… probably move it from Coronation Park to Burlington Beach with nicer sand beach though!

sure Jill is smiling… in the nice warm kayak!

Cheers,

Rob
