LOST Swimming, September 1

um… would you believe it was really foggy?!… okay, would you believe I still had my camera set to night pictures from the Blue Moon Swim last night!

So after the “Blue Moon Swim” last night, a few of us knew that the water might be a bit tepid this morning… it was 55F last night!

Fortunately it warmed up for Saturday’s LOST Swim though… it was 56F!  😉

But, you know what… it was a beautiful day anyway!  The sun was out… the water was flat… and there was 38 LOSTies out for a nice dip!  The funny thing about swims in water that cold is that if you came down to the LOST Beach by yourself and found the water was that cold… you’d probably scream and head back up to the car!  So would I.

what a great day… albeit a bit chilly!

But LOST is proof of the strength in numbers.  To be accurate, I think there was still a few screams getting in… but 38 people got in… and swam for about 45 minutes!  That’s impressive!  A few without wetsuits too… that’s really impressive!

And the other thing that was kinds cool was that we had 6 of the 7 Lake O aspirants down for a LOST Swim!  (we were just missing Amanda Kelessi this week).  But we did get a couple of pics for the history books… it really has been a great summer for open water swimming!

Rob, Annaleise, Madhu, Colleen, Michele & Francois… 2012 Lake O aspirants! (missing Amanda)

And to bring you up to date:

  1. Madhu Nagaraja: completed his swim from Port Dalhousie to Oakville, 41k, on July 29, in 24 hours and 26 minutes.
  2. Francois Hamel: had to abort his swim after about 8.5 hours due to a shoulder injury.
  3. Rob Kent: completed his swim from Port Dalhousie to Oakville, 42k, on Aug 14, in 20 hours and 52 minutes.
  4. Annaleise Carr: completed her swim from NOTL to Toronto, 51k, on Aug 19, in 26 hours and 41 minutes.
  5. Amanda Kelessi: had to abort her swim after about 3 hours due to a heart incident.
  6. Michele Benoit: had to postpone her swim until 2013 due to boat and weather issues.
  7. Colleen Sheilds: is hoping to complete her 3rd Crossing on Wednesday, Sep 5th!!!  (I’ll be posting updates here!!!)

Rob, Annaleise and Madhu… the three 2012 Lake O Crossing successes! (so far, Colleen leaves tomorrow!)

Cheers,

Rob

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
