A huge LOST milestone!

We had our first LOST swimmer swim in a swim meet!!!  Unbeknownst to me, Anna-Marie Purvis swam last weekend in the Burlington Masters “Winter Splash” swim meet… and she did really well!!!

For those of you who don’t know Anna-Marie, she was one of those swimmers who stumbled across our group or our site and just showed up one Saturday morning.  Very quiet and unassuming… and with no wetsuit!

A lot of those swimmers end up being “one off” swimmers, which is fine, it’s not everyone’s bag… but it is always great to see them come out a second time.  And Anna-Marie show up again… and kept coming back… and actually became a regular… and she even did the LOST Race!

The cool thing is that she started out quite rusty (and I mean this as a compliment) and gradually got better and better.  She also isn’t a triathlete or some former super-star age group swimmer and had never been a big open water swimmer either… and hadn’t actually swum for years… but this got her back in it!

And if you read the LOST Philosophy at the side of this page, that’s exactly what I believe in… “participation”!  So now she’s quietly taken it to the next level and became the first LOST Swimmer in a swim meet!  Atta go Anna-Marie!!!

Check out her results… she put up some very respectable times in: 50 Fly (pg 2), 100 IM (pg8) and 100 Free (pg 9)!  http://bmsc.ca/images/stories/files/2011_Wintersplash_results.pdf

And just so you can pat her on the back when you see her this summer... that's Anna-Marie, 6th from the left! (click to enlarge)

Cheers,

Rob

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
