Hi LOSTies,

A social event / fun-raiser is being planned for the evening of June 25th at Bronte Harbour Yacht Club regarding Melanie’s Lake Ontario Swim Crossing!

There will be games (we are looking into a dunk tank), prizes, light snacks, cash bar, music (we are hoping to secure a band) and most of all, FUN!  Tickets will be available for sale soon, but I wanted to let you know the date so you can mark it on your agendas and hopefully come.

Also, I am attaching a corporate sponsorship letter, if you know anyone you think might be interested and able to make a sponsorship, feel free to forward it along.  Similarly, if you or anyone you know can donate some door prizes, or help in any other way, it would be much appreciated.

Hope to see you there!

Cheers,

Rob

Melanie's Lake O Crossing

Background information:
On Aug. 11-12 this year, Melanie Price will attempt to swim across Lake Ontario from Port Dalhousie to Oakville.
The 42.2km swim is raising funds for Lake Ontario Waterkeeper (LOW), a registered charity working to restore and maintain the ability to swim, drink and fish in Lake Ontario. Through the swim, Melanie hopes to increase awareness of the need to protect Lake Ontario’s natural resources and encourages everyone to “Help put the Great back into the Lake” so we can all benefit and appreciate the Great Lake for years to come.
Charitable donations to LOW are greatly appreciated and can be made through Melanie’s giving page: http://www.canadahelps.org/gp/11261

Launched in 2001, LOW works hard to create a watershed where people can safely swim, drink, and fish. The charity engages in legal processes to enforce environmental laws and help to inform wise decision-making. The group educates and mentors people who want to learn more about water quality challenges and environmental law, including student volunteers from many of Canada’s top law schools.
LOW conducts research to identify threats to water quality and natural habitat and to monitor trends in environmental law. LOW is also a member of the internationally-recognized Waterkeeper Alliance. This New York-based group is led by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and provides a link between the world’s 180-plus independent waterkeepers.

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
