Hi everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that Rob is leaving on his Lake Ontario Crossing tonight, (technically tomorrow, 0300 Monday, Aug 13)!!!  So there should be some updates when you wake up in the morning!

If you would like to follow along there are 3 places to look:

1) I will do my best to post comments each hour (approx on the hour), on the LOSTswimming.com website.  It will give a bit of a verbal description coming in live from the crew.

https://lostswimming.com/

2) those same posts will be copied to the LOST Swimming page on Facebook as well.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/113823994902/

3) there will be a live GPS feed on a system called “SPOT“, that you can see by clicking on this link.

Currently the weather conditions look okay, but as you have all seen, the weather has been changing quickly and dramatically in the last couple of days, so we are keeping our fingers crossed!

Rob and his crew of 15 people, on 4 boats, will be leaving Port Dalhousie and swimming exactly the same distance as was run in the last event at the Olympics today… a full marathon distance of 42.2 km!

The finish will be at the Navy Street Pier in Oakville (aka The LOST Beach!).  Of course we all want to know how long it will take him… and of course we don’t know the answer, but best guess is around 15 hours (with a big give or take!), which would have him arriving around dinner time tomorrow!  But the best way to find out for sure will be to track him on the website!  So if you can make it down to the pier, I know he’d love to see you when he finishes his marathon swim!

Cheers,

Joanne

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
