… with all the excitement from Francois and Madhu’s swims… I almost forgot to put out our LOST Swim on Saturday!

55 swimmers, 73F… and a bit “bouncy!”

A great swim out there today!  Colleen, Amanda, Michele, Madhu (just a little loosen up swim) Bill (all the way from Ottawa… and who has his sights set on swimming the English Channel in 2014!) came out for the LOST Sunriser’s swim at 6:00 am, we also had Bill kayaking while Mel went for a run… they are training for IM Cozumel.

See, even Cousin Al is happy about the new beach! 😉

One really nice thing… we got to test out our new beach!  After a few weeks of construction, the Town is finally done!  And they did a great job!  Not very often one gets to thank City Hall for listening… but to give credit where credit is due… they built the new beach way too steep!  Which had me panicked that our beach would be ruined!  But I spoke to Barrie at the Town, who was in charge of the whole renovation of the pier and the beach… told him our issues… and he listened… and agreed… and reacted quickly!  They left the east end still steep… sloped the middle section a bit more gradual… and made the west end even better than it was before!  They even listened to me and put up new ladders on the pier that will make it much easier to get out there too!  Good work Barrie and the guys at the Town… thanks a lot!

okay… with the big waves it was still a little hard to get out, even on the new beach… sometimes you have to do the “bum slide!”

It was a little rough… but nothing too bad.  We did a nice out and back… but by the time we got back… it was a little rougher.  The waves were now breaking pretty well and we did 25 minutes out… and 20 minutes back… that was the good news… you at least got a good push on the way back!  Besides, we get probably 8 out of 10 days perfect and flat as glass… it’s good to mix it up a little… and good training and good experience to learn how to swim in waves!

The best line of the day, however, goes to John Gayford… along with Seb, our two resident Aussies… and leave it to the Aussies to have great expressions.  I went up to John after and asked him how he liked it out there?  His reply: “yah, noyce swim todoiy… a bit bouncy!”  I’m stealing that line: a bit bouncy!  haha.

Denyse enjoyed it… although I don’t know how she swam with her Crocs on?

Funny thing was, it was overcast and pretty gray looking… big waves crashing in… not very inviting looking… but the water was toasty warm!  Colleen and I were guess when we got in… I said 75F… she said 72F… it was 73F… maybe I’m loosing my touch, I was out by 2 degrees!  Nonetheless, we had the lofty amount of 55 swimmers out… very nice!  And more than half of that over for coffee after… another great Saturday morning.

See you on Saturday… one week before the LOST Race and the 10k National Championships!

Cheers,

Rob

The rough water didn’t keep the dogs out… or John…

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
