Some LOST news…

So here’s a few developments in the LOST world…

We'll get everyone out on the Lake!

1) I’ve created a new page on this website… and a whole new organization… LOCO!!! (Lake Ontario Crossing Organization).  A crazy new organization for boaters and crew who are willing and able to help escort swimmers across Lake O!!!  Very exciting, if I do say so myself!!!  (you knew I was going to come up with some pithy little acronym, didn’t you! actually, kudo’s to Scott McKinnon… I was stumped!).  Check out the tab above, we’ve already got a few boaters, crew and captains!  Keep ’em coming in… this is great!

2) If you get out to Vancouver and want to go for a dip LOST style, I came across a group much like ours called the Vancouver Open Water Swimming Association or VOWSA (our acronym is still cooler though!).  I was trying to track down swimmer for an open water swimming friend in LA, he was looking for a Danish man, Helge Jensen, who held the world record for the English Channel in 1960!

I ended up talking to open water friends all over the world, looking for Helge, never found him (he supposedly lives in BC now), but I did find VOWSA… they even have an English Channel swimmer too, Rod Craig, who just swam it last summer! So look them up if you get out to Vancouver in the summer.  Their website is:  http://vowsa.bc.ca/

3)  I know I mentioned that our own Melanie Price is swimming Lake O this summer (hooraw!)… but we have a second swimmer doing it too, Christine Arsenault, who is from down more around St. Catherines, that will be doing it too!  Oh… and we even have some rumblings of a relay race!!!  I think I’ve created a monster… the girls at BMSC, who would never swim in Lake O are now die hards!!!  Mel is doing it solo and Colleen Chiki is gauging interest for a relay (kinda called you out on that one, didn’t I Colleen!)… and I suggested a 4 man relay race… I’m sure we could get a few teams together… that would be cool!!!

picture the relay take-over... but without the starting blocks!

Cheers,

Rob

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
