… it was a bit of a weird morning out there this morning… the water temp wasn’t really an issue one way or another (which is weird in and of itself!)… it was 60F / 16C… but it was fairly foggy and dead flat… so foggy that there wasn’t really much sun, so when you got in you couldn’t see the bottom (which some people like, but I prefer to see the bottom), but you could still see your whole arm… and because of all the rain we’ve had there was lots of jetsam and flotsam… now if you are going to be an open water swimmer (or a boater for that matter) you have to know what jetsam and flotsam are… jetsam and flotsam are essentially floaters… traditionally stuff from a shipwreck, but can include everything from sticks and seaweed to styrofoam cups and dead bodies… now you know… but in our case it was it more just sticks and seaweed… and I saw a bush floating by… no bodies though… that’s just in the Harlem River.  Aaaaanyway, strange day.  (maybe it was just me, because my mind still seems to be wandering!)

We didn’t break last week’s LOST World Record of 22 swimmers today, but we did do okay as we still had 16

sorry Dalia, your still a bit too young for LOST swimming... next summer though...

swimmers out, including this week’s newbie, Tom!  A friend of last week’s newbie Karyn… a positive sign, she came back and even brought a friend!  Also Ronald brought out Albert, who hasn’t been out since the LOST Race last year, I believe.  The real treat was having John and Hugh there… not so much because John and Hugh were there, 😉 but because John’s wife, Trish, was there in the kayak!  It’s always nice to have a ‘yaker around!

Good luck to all those LOSTies who missed the swim and are up at Muskoka doing the tri there today… also a few doing the Lake Placid Ironman today too!  woohoo!  I remember doing the Muskoka Long Course to train for my first Ironman, Lake Placid… let’s just say I’m glad I quite happy to just be doing my LOST swim and heading up for a nice chai latte!  Good luck, LOST Triathletes!

Speaking of coffee (or chai latte’s, as the case may be)… Darren brought up an “interesting” idea (“interesting” is one of those mis-used LOST words, which actually has another meaning, in this case “stupid”… kinda like the word “warm”)… aaaaaaanyway, his idea was to do the Death Race in exactly one

year today.  125km ultra-marathon RUN, 17,000 feet elevation change, in Grande Cache Alberta… he was thinking relay and through it open to Alex and I… Alex said “so how many do you have so far for the relay?”… Darren:”Including you?… 2”.  I said we should do it solo.  It was kinda quiet for a while.  Then there was several “hmmmms”… not a “no” to be heard.  Darren, Alex, me, Peter, Bill, Hugh… so far… to much to think about while we’re sober.  Come out for a run on Wednesday night and we can discuss it… over beers.  Or if you are smart… you might want to stay clear of the group for a while.

PS. I know it’s not swimming… but it is stupid… and that has to count for something!  Besides, LOST swimming is a nice cross-training for ultra-running.

I’m just sayin’…

Cheers,

Rob

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
