LOST swim, July 30, 2011... yet another perfect day!

… but we had another excellent swim!  39 swimmers, including 6 from the LOST Sunrisers and a handful of scragglers, rolling in late!  Not another LOST world record, but not too shabby for a lazy, long weekend when tons of people were away.

The temperature was very nice as well… 68F / 20C!  I’ve been a wimp this year, swimming in a wetsuit (unlike last year when I swam from May 1 on, naked)… but I’m rationalizing that it’s because the 17 of us are doing Ironman Canada in 27 days, so it’s part of my training.  Having said that, I missed swimming naked, so I did do yesterdays swim naked… ya, I’m rusty… ’cause it did seem cold.  Wetsuit swimming really is a pleasant way to go… you go faster and you are toasty warm… but there just is something about not using the crutch and being authentic.  Kinda like the aluminum bats in baseball… you can definitely hit the ball way further, but it’s cheating… which is why they aren’t allowed in the majors.  Besides, the “plink” of the ball hitting the bat isn’t the same as the “crack” of the bat.  Call me old school.

As you can see the water was it’s usual rough self!  I think people thought I was nuts (I probably use that expression too much… people are going to start thinking it’s true!) when I said earlier in the year that the first few swim we had were the aboration, given how rough they were… and that flat as glass was actually the norm… check out the last several weeks… yes, flat as glass is the norm!  Which is why it actually is nice to have some rough water to play in once in a while.  It’s kind of like when we lived in San Diego, years ago, the weather is so nice all the time that you actually look forward to a rainy day!

 Cheers,

Rob

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
