What we missed in Key West…

… I love LOST Swimming… but we really didn’t miss anything… we were in Key West, baby! haha.  However, a good number of the good people of LOST did turn out for a nice little dip in the Great Lake.  Jason and Ben took over my “Walmart Greeter” position and welcomed everyone to LOST Swimming and gave them the low down on safety and all that jazz.  I believe Elizabeth did another bang up job as the “Check Out Girl” too!  Thanks you guys… I love the fact that the place can run without me!

LOST Swim for June 16, 2012… 35 LOST and happy swimmers… in 62F water!

Another great turnout… 35 swimmers… 62F / 17C… what’s not to like!

And speaking of the place running without me… Joanne and several other LOSTies (Mel, Bill, Helene, Claudia, etc.) are doing the first ever Mt. Tremblant 1/2 Ironman on the weekend… so I’m travelling along as the mechanic, athletic supporter and chief bottle washer!  So I’m going to have to rely on Jason, Ben and Elizabeth… but you’ll have a bit more support too… as Alex will be in the zodiac and Jackie in the kayak!  Thanks everyone… and see you next weekend!

Should be warming up nicely… looks like it will be in the mid 60’s… which is perfect… note that if you are swimming in other smaller lakes or even in shallower or sheltered areas of Lake O… well, they may be getting a bit ripe!  You might not want to do that, because as they warm up (anything over the low 70’s or so, depending on other features) that’s when you can start to get sick or get ear infections or have mosquito larvae etc find you attractive.  Yup, the best place to swim from here on out is… the LOST Beach!!!

I’m betting there will be a good turnout with this heat… currently 32C… so go jump in the Lake!!!

Have fun, be friendly… and swim safe!

Cheers,

Rob

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
