The short answer… the water is 70F!  Wetsuits are optional… and attendance will be taken!  😉

Two weeks ago the water temp was in the low 40’s… last week it was in the low 50’s… this week, with the warm weather and lack of wind (which brings up colder water from the bottom), the water temp jumped from about 55F to 70F (21C)!

On Saturday, little Gullivers Lake was 62F… by Monday it was 67F… and was now too warm to do any cold water conditioning for my Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, even without a wetsuit… so the plan was to go to Lake O last night and start the Gulliver’s process over at about 55F.  But I checked the websites on the “Weather” tab (above), and to my surprise it said it was about 62F!

So I recruited my daughters, Maisey and Jillian, to come down with me last night to test it out.  Maisey decided to join me for a dip… and Jill went and checked the water temp… she said it was 70F…  we didn’t believe her.  The funny thing was, there was a fair bit of algae clumps in the water, which I noticed had started forming at Gullivers too, as it was getting warm.  So we decided to swim off the end of the pier by the lighthouse, past most of the algae.  We dipped our toes in… and it really was 70F!

Maisey and I did cannon-balls off the end of the pier!  It was georgeous!  We just had a light 15 minute swim… mmm…. toasty!

The net result is that THE FIRST OFFICIAL LOST SWIM OF 2010 WILL BE SATURDAY MORNING AT 8:00AM!!!  SEE YOU THERE!!!

PS.  If you want to know more details about where etc, check the tab above on “How to be a LOST Swimmer”.

Cheers,

Rob

I founded LOST Swimming because I like open water swimming and would like to see it grow and thrive in Lake Ontario. I started as a competitive swimmer as a kid and ended up getting as far as a silver medal at Nationals and going to the Olympic Trials in 1988. But I retired after that, I was sick of swimming. So I got into running marathons and have run over 35 to date, as well as a few ultra marathons, including the Marathon des Sables (7 day, ultra across the Sahara Desert). I also kind of fell into triathlons and have done a handful of Ironman tri's too. This gradually got me back in the water and in 2006 I took the plunge and attempted swimming the English Channel. I didn't quite make it across, but the circle was now complete and after 17 years I was a swimmer again! Although I still do plenty of pool swimming, I now much prefer open water swimming and like to say that open water swimming is to pool swimming, what trail running is to treadmill running! As a result I hope to encourage more people to join me for a dip in Lake Ontario as often as we can!
